Project area Z
Central hub for human microbiome resources and information
Project Z01 is a central hub for human gut microbiome resources within the consortium, providing high-quality microbial isolates and comprehensive associated data. While many studies have focused on identifying which microbes are present in the gut, the functions and interactions of individual species remain largely unexplored. Cultivating gut bacteria is essential to understand their roles in health and disease, enable experimental studies, and the design of defined microbial communities.
The project can provide extensive collections of human gut bacteria, currently comprising hundreds of strains representing diverse species, including previously unknown taxa. Each isolate is thoroughly characterized, with detailed phenotypic and genomic data, and made accessible through the Leibniz Institute DSMZ, which provides long-term storage, quality control, and public availability. Advanced high-throughput cultivation technologies, including microfluidics-based single-cell sorting and automated workflows, allow efficient isolation and in-depth analysis of many strains, enabling both broad and personalized collections.
Project Z01 also develops and integrates bioinformatics tools and databases such as BacDive, StrainInfo, and MediaDive, providing standardized, FAIR-compliant access to microbial data. These resources support reproducible research, facilitate defined communities design, and accelerate functional analyses of the human gut microbiome.
By combining cutting-edge cultivation, rigorous quality control, and open-access data, Project Z01 offers a robust, community-accessible platform that empowers researchers within this consortium, and beyond, to explore microbial diversity, unravel microbial functions, and advance our understanding of the human gut ecosystem.
